Weld Repair of the Sophia D Bulk Freighter
Less than 1 year old and 56,000 metric tons, the Sophia D bulk freighter, loaded with thousands of tons of iron ore on route to China, ran aground on January 21, 2009, just off the coast of Brazil. The rudder was severely damaged to the point where the vessel could not sail under its own power. The vessel was towed to Curacao, a major deep water port in the Caribbean and the rudder was taken off underwater. Guest speaker, Uwe Aschemeier, will discuss the weld repairs performed on the ship, both above and underwater.
Major repair work was performed on the rudder, the rudder horn, internal girders and stiffener plates. The hull of the vessel required unique welding procedures and inspection during repair. The spectacular underwater removal of the 50 ton rudder was filmed by the National Geographic Channel, and featured in the show, “The World’s Toughest Fixes.”
