Calgary Dinner Meeting Announcement - Feb. 15, 2012, Tri-hosted by AWS Alberta, ASM & CWA Calgary
“Changing the Welding Industry by a New Metal Transfer Mode” by Martin Willinger (Fronius Canada)
Abstract
New materials and extreme service requirements are challenging the welding industry more than
ever. To achieve these demanding requirements, new welding processes must be implemented
along with new generations of filler metals and shielding gases. For over 50 years, the welding
industry has been using the same weld joint preparation designs. By using new welding process
technology, it becomes possible to change the joint design to allow for more economic preparations (e.g., narrow joint design). These changes, in turn, result in less distortion, reduced heat input, and shorter weld time to complete the weld joint. This presentation will focus on the new welding processes developed specifically for pipe welds and cladding operations, as well as the more efficient weld gap preparations that these new processes allow.
About our Speaker
Martin Willinger was educated as a tool maker and universal welder. He also served in the military for six months. He joined Fronius in 2001, traveling through Europe, South Africa and North America on several business trips. He moved to Canada in 2001, and holding the position of TSN Manager at Fronius, he moved to Edmonton in the fall of 2011. His experience spans through many industries including automotive, nuclear, pipeline and heavy machine construction, with exposure to manual, robotic and hard automation processes. Martin has experience in TIG, MIG/MAG, SMAW, plasma, laser hybrid and tandem welding processes.

Edmonton Dinner Meeting Announcement - Feb. 9, 2012, Hosted by AWS Alberta
“Effective Use of Welding Gases for Process Optimization” by Joe Berkmanns, EWE (Linde)
Abstract
This presentation will briefly cover the history and development of shielding gases and the impact of shielding gases on bottom-line process cost savings.
Welding is a complex manufacturing technology, which often requires a holistic approach in order to realize significant savings in production time and cost. Unfortunately for shielding gas, it is often seen as an inevitable necessity for the gas shielded welding processes and simply a commodity that should be purchased at the lowest possible price. The presentation will point out that the shielding gas, in fact, has a direct influence on the welding process, and that its accurate selection always has a major impact on the quality and productivity; consequently turning a shielding gas into a process gas, and a necessary evil into a valuable tool.
The benefits of a well considered choice of welding gas will be explained and shown by relevant real life examples. This presentation discusses the impact of gases used in welding to optimize the process, increase productivity and quality, and ultimately decrease total operational manufacturing costs.
About our Speaker
Dr. Berkmanns joined Linde in 1997 as Program Manager for laser applications. Prior to that, he
worked at the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology for eight years, where he was involved with
applied research related to laser welding and cutting. In 2004, he took responsibility for Linde
Innovations in the USA. The BOC acquisition in 2006 allowed Joe to lead Linde’s business
development efforts in the North American manufacturing market. As Segment Manager, Manufacturing Industry, Joe oversaw technologies such as welding, cutting, coating of metals, as well as molding, extrusion and forming of plastics. Joe holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering and a European Welding Engineer (EWE) degree. He also holds patents on laser-arc processing, filler wire system and dual beam laser welding.

Calgary Dinner Meeting Announcement - Jan. 18, 2012, Co-Hosted by CWA Calgary
“The Evolution of Stainless Steel” by Bob Van Deelen of Sandvik Materials Technology NAFTA
Abstract
Stainless steels were first produced during the early 1900s. Since that time, a wide range of different familes and grades of stainless steels have been developed to perform well in a wide range of aggressive environments. The evening’s presentation will explain how stainless steels have evolved from the basic austenitic, ferritic and martensite alloys to the latest grades of duplex alloys. Bob will also explain the significance of ferrite content and discuss the correct procedures for the pickling and passivation of stainless steels.
About our Speaker
Bob Van Deelen graduated from the Amsterdam Technical Institute with a degree in Welding Engineering. He was part owner of a welding engineering company specializing in aerospace and military welding. Bob has completed his welding certification on all alloys to DND standards. He has also consulted to companies such as CGE, Boeing, Spar Aero Space, and the Canadian and US Military. Bob sold his company in 1984 and joined Avesta Stainless Inc. as Technical Manager, where he was employed by Avesta for over 20 years, consulting and solving welding issues internationally. Bob is currently employed by Sandvik Materials Technology in the capacity of Technical Manager – NAFTA.
