February 14, 2012 Meeting Let the Beat Move Your Feet

February 14, 2012 Meeting
Let the Beat Move Your Feet
The Cleveland Section hosts a Special Meeting, February 14, 2012, think Valentine’s Day.
Want to feel better, look better, and be more confident? Of course you do!
While welders are noted for hand-eye coordination, let’s find out how we coordinate our feet.
February’s AWS meeting is being set up to do all these things, and have fun doing them. Plus, members and
their spouses can enjoy a two-for-one dinner compliments of the Cleveland Section.
Two professional instructors from LaDanse Cleveland (ladansecleveland.com), one of the area’s premier
dance studios, will review and introduce techniques of ballroom dancing. This will provide confidence and skills
for your next encounter with that special someone.
For those a bit sore from welding out of position, dancing improves cardiovascular, joint, and respiratory health.
Personal Development Hours are yours to earn as you see improvements in your self-esteem, confidence, and
social skills for on-the-job or after-work relations. Plus, depending on your partner, dancing can be nonthreatening
to toes and feet.
Make your plans now to join us.
Welding Fume Control
At the Cleveland Section’s January 10 meeting, Paul G. Anacki, QSSP – PGA Sales Associates, Inc.,
Manufacturer’s Representative for 3M Welding Products, and Jason Lange, applications engineer, Automation
Division, Lincoln Electric, discussed the respiratory protection in the welding environment.
Anacki explained the various types of personal respiratory protection available from disposable and reusable to
powered and supplied air respirators.
Lange described how and why engineered methods can help met the OSHA and EPA regulations
Update Section By-Laws
Cleveland Section members at the January meeting voted to accept the up-dated section by-laws. A
committee rewrote the former by-laws to meet the needs of the Cleveland Section using the AWS suggested
section by-laws as a guideline. Copies of the proposed by-laws have been available at the welcome table and
on the section web site.
Changing Chairs
Richard E. Hart stepped up to Second Vice Chairman of the Cleveland Section to replace Ashley Webel.
Ashley decided to return to college to complete a bachelor’s degree.
For the Cleveland Section, Richard has handled the section’s award program, including the annual awards
program at the April meetings. A Certified Welding Inspector (CWI), he has more than 20 years experience as
a welding instructor. Richard created a school-based program called PROJECT W.E.L.D. (Worthy
Employment, Leadership Development). It is an Ohio State recognized program designed to stimulate interest
and awareness in the welding Industry. After retiring from the Cleveland Municipal School District six years
ago, he put the helmet and gloves back on to work as a production welder.
Nominees for Section Offices
The officers of the Cleveland Section will take nominees for section offices during the February and March
meeting with the voting at the April meeting. Elected section officers include the chairman, first and second

Scholarship Money

someone you know is interested in applying for a welding related scholarship, please contact our Scholarship
Chairman, Bob Gardner at 440-286-4590. The application deadline is March 1, 2012 for this year’s
scholarships.
Section scholarships are awarded to residents within the Cleveland Section boundaries. It is not necessary to
be an AWS member or related to an AWS member. Each of these awards has a specific focus.
In addition to the Cleveland Section scholarships, AWS Scholarships are awarded at the national, district, and
local levels. Details and applications are available at http://www.aws.org.
CWI Seminars and Exams
Two seminars and certification exams to qualify as an AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) are scheduled
for this area in July and October 2012.
The July seminar runs July 22-27, 2012, and the exam is Saturday, July 28. The October dates are October
21-26 for the seminar, and October 27 for the exam. Both are scheduled to take place at the Lincoln Electric
Company.
Apply and register for either of these seminars and exams in order to meet the application deadlines: June 18
for the July seminar and exam, and September 17 for the October seminar and exam.
Louis Verhas, section certification chairman, can provide information at our section meetings, or call him at
330-963-6960, or at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
The CWI certification is widely recognized in the worldwide welding industry as a method to help ensure the
highest level of quality workmanship.
The seminar provides a way for skilled and knowledgeable individuals, with limited time to study, to prepare for
the AWS certification exam. Seasoned instructors teach the material you need to know and how to use and
understand the latest standards.
PLEASE NOTE: To take the AWS certification exam, you must submit an exam
application separately to the Certification Department six weeks prior to the exam date
you have selected.
For more details on this program and Personal Development Hours (PDH), visit the
AWS website at http://www.aws.org/certification/CWI or call 800-443-9353, ext. 273.
