January 10, 2012 Meeting
Welding Fume Control
When you smell or see fumes, you will generally check the exhaust system or other welders. But what about
when you don’t smell or see fumes? Can you minimize or eliminate fume risk? Do you know the latest OSHA
and EPA welding fume regulations? Do the new hexavalent chromium regulations apply to your shop?
At the Cleveland Section’s January 10 meeting at St. Paul’s Hellenic Center, these and other questions will be
answered by industry experts from companies offering solutions and answers for the weld shop environment.
This technical talk qualifies for Personal Development Hours credit.
Christmas Party and Auction
The generosity of attendees at our annual auction during the Christmas Party increases our means to help
welding students earn skills for their careers.
The broad range of donations enticed attendees to increase their bids during the silence and live auctions. This
year’s auction was up from last year; this year’s gross is $11,960, versus $8,941 last year. This revenue is the
Section’s primary source of funding for Section scholarships and helps support other Section activities.
Individual donations ranged from gift baskets, to wine assortments, to handmade pillows and blankets, to gift
cards, and Christmas decorations, snow shovels, and children’s toys.
Company donations came from The Lincoln Electric Company and its Welding School and sales office, O.E.
Meyer Company, Buyers Products, Smith Equipment, Miller Electric, M.K. Morse, Hypertherm/Tillman, Abicor
Binzel, Jackson Products, Metabo, Crown Alloys Company, and Thermadyne.
Products included welding machines, oxy/fuel welding & cutting outfits, auto-darkening helmets, a 148-piece
tool set, and toolboxes.
Auction chairman Paul Revolinsky and his volunteer committee organized the enjoyable and profitable
evening. Auctioneer Mike Sherman, notching his second year of practice, challenged the audience to support
our scholarship program with their generosity.
Scholarship Money
Each year our Cleveland Section awards scholarships for skills development and academic pursuits. If you, or
someone you know is interested in applying for a welding related scholarship, please contact our Scholarship
Chairman, Bob Gardner at 440-286-4590. The application deadline is March 1, 2012 for this year’s
scholarships.
Section scholarships are awarded to residents within the Cleveland Section boundaries. It is not necessary to
be an AWS member or related to an AWS member. Each of these awards has a specific focus.
Gerkin Scholarship—created and named in honor of Dr. John Gerkin. Dr. Gerkin was active in the Cleveland
Section and had served as a chairman. He twice served as National President of AWS. He was known as a
researcher who did extensive work on Ti in aerospace applications while at TRW. The scholarship is $3,000
per year for up to four years for a student in a two-year or four-year degree program.
Sacha Award—Created by the Sacha family in memory of Ray Sacha. Ray was a welding instructor at
Cuyahoga Valley, and very active in the Cleveland Section over a long period of time. Candidates are those
enrolled in welding related degree programs who want to advance their welding skills by taking a course at the
Lincoln School.
Jack Buck Award—Created by Ellen Flint in memory of her Uncle Jack Buck. Mr. Buck worked for years as
pipe fitter including at the Perry Plant. Ms. Flint was his niece, who with his encouragement went into business
for herself and was success. She wanted to honor the memory of her uncle by encouraging young people to

improve themselves. As Mr. Buck was a pipe fitter, the award is for a candidate taking a pipe-welding course
at the Lincoln School.
Plus—Beside the named awards we have a general scholarship fund and a Motorsports award. The
Motorsports Award is for a recipient to develop advanced welding skills at either the basic or advanced
Motorsports Class taught by the Lincoln School. Welders from various motorsports teams, from organizations
such as NASCAR and IRL, attend this program.
In addition to the Cleveland Section scholarships, AWS Scholarships are awarded at the national, district, and
local levels. Details and applications are available at http://www.aws.org.
Let the Beat Move Your Feet, Bring Your Special Someone!
The Cleveland Section hosts a special meeting, February 14, 2012, Valentine’s Day for you and your dance
partner. Want to feel better, look better, and be more confident? Of course you do!
Your Cleveland Section has contracted with LaDanse Cleveland (ladansecleveland.com), one of the area’s
premier dance studios, to provide two professional instructors to both review and introduce techniques of
ballroom dancing. For those a bit sore from welding out of position or shoveling snow, dancing improves
cardiovascular, joint, and respiratory health. At the same time, you will see improvements in your self-esteem,
confidence, and social skills for on-the-job or after-work relations. Plus, depending on your partner, dancing
can be non-threatening to toes and feet.
Update of Section By-Laws
Cleveland Section members at the January meeting can discuss the proposed up-date to the section by-laws
prior to the vote at that meeting. A committee compared the current by-laws with the AWS suggested section
by-laws, and then wrote new by-laws to meet the needs of the Cleveland Section. Copies of the proposed bylaws
have been available at the welcome table and on the section web site.
Nominees for Section Offices
The officers of the Cleveland Section will take nominees for section offices during the next two meetings to
start the election process. Elected section officers include the chairman, first and second vice chairmen,
secretary, and treasurer. All current Cleveland Section AWS voting members can run for these offices.
CWI Seminars and Exams
Two seminars and certification exams to qualify as an AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) are scheduled
for this area in July and October 2012.
The July seminar runs July 22-27, 2012, and the exam is Saturday, July 28. The October dates are October
21-26 for the seminar, and October 27 for the exam. Both are scheduled to take place at the Lincoln Electric
Company.
Apply and register for either of these seminars and exams in order to meet the application deadlines: June 18
for the July seminar and exam, and September 17 for the October seminar and exam.
Louis Verhas, section certification chairman, can provide information at our section meetings or call him at
330-963-6960, or at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
PLEASE NOTE: Registering to attend one of the exam prep courses does not automatically qualify you to take
the AWS certification exam. The exam application must be submitted separately to the Certification
Department six weeks prior to the exam date you have selected. For more details on this program, visit the
AWS website at http://www.aws.org/certification/CWI or call 800-443-9353, ext. 273.
Volunteer Opportunities
Here’s your chance to meet with people from other companies, help promote welding, support the Cleveland
Section. Current openings on the various committees only require one to three hours of your time each month.
Talk to any of the section officers or board members for more details.
Cleveland Section Library
Need a code before bidding on a new job? Got an inspection question? Seeking material specifications? You
may find answers to these and many other questions at the Cleveland Section’s library of AWS books, codes,
and other publications. Give Total Quality Testing a call to set a time to use the library (216-676-6900).
AWS Launches E-Newsletter
AWS members can view welding news with This Week in Welding, the Society’s e-newsletter. It contains
stories from the Associated Press, New York Times, Financial Times and leading industry publications. To
sign up, visit http://www.aws.org/news.
SPONSORS
Many of our sponsors offer their time as board members and volunteers and donate items for our annual
auction, please support them.
Every month during the Section’s business year, over six hundred welding professionals see the ads in this
newsletter. That’s over 5,000 opportunities each this year. Many of those welding professionals make
purchasing decisions. A business card ad is a great way to get a buyer’s attention and show support for the
Cleveland Section. Please contact Harry Sadler at 216-383-2444 or .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) for
more information. A business card ad is only $200 for the entire year.
Did you know you can attend the evening’s presentation without going to the dinner? All
you have to do is show up. The technical presentation is always free.
