November 8, 2011 Meeting
Over the Bridge
Of the many bridges over the Cuyahoga River, the Innerbelt Bridge often draws more local attention than
others and orange barrels as a magnet attracts chips off a saw.
To help us understand the complex bridge project, Cathie Farroll and Dan Belardo, representatives of the
Innerbelt Bridge project general contractor, will present current information about the project with added focus
on welding applications at the November 8 Cleveland Section meeting at St. Paul’s Hellenic Church.
Cathie, an employee of HNTB, an engineering, architecture, and planning firm, works with the Walsh/HNTB
Innerbelt Bridge team, providing expertise in communications, project information, business assistance, and
government relations. With bachelor and MBA degrees, she brings more than 20 years experience in transit
and transportation, managing public involvement and project communications for light rail transit projects and
the design/build I-64 reconstruction project.
Dan Belardo began as a project engineer for Walsh Construction shortly after his graduation from The Ohio
State University in 2010. During his first Innerbelt Bridge project assignment he developed the work plan for
welding the 18 x 204 H piles, claimed to be the largest ever used. Dan, with a degree in Construction Systems
Management and Finance, worked with welding specs and procedures, met with welding consultants, and
developed the current process where each splice takes about 1.5 hours, compared with the original estimate of
6 to 8 hours. Now assigned to the Structures Team, his focus is on the structural steel for the main viaduct,
specifically the delta girders—the signature visual element of the bridge. The team is planning how to optimize
crane locations for multiple picks without boom interference from previously set girders.
The Walsh Group, a family-held business founded in 1898, ranks in the nation’s Top 20 Contractors according
to Engineering News and Record, with over $450 million in capital equipment and more than 5,000 engineers
and skilled trades people.
Stump the Experts
Nearly 60 attendees and “experts” exchanged questions to stump each other during the October meeting at
the Willoughby-Eastlake Technical Center.
Special guest Alex Pazkowski – Second Place Finisher in the SkillsUSA Welding Competition, told us how his
many practice hours opened doors to meet people with job offers and earned him $40,000 scholarship so he
can complete a masters degree program. Alex is one step away from competing in the world competition.
The lively give-n-take questions ranged from welding history to the Twin Towers, oxyfuel flame temperatures to
tensile strength of aluminum at various temperatures, and where to use which NDT to preheat timing and
locations.
The Expert Panel included: Larry Boros, Mike Sherman, Ashely Webel, Bob Gardner, Harry Sadler, Karl
Hoes, Dan Harrison, John Kubit, and Phil Schmidt.
Update Section By-Laws
The Cleveland Section is in the process of up-dating its section by-laws. A committee compared its current bylaws
with the AWS suggested section by-laws, and then wrote new by-laws to meet the needs of the Cleveland
Section. Copies of the proposed by-laws are available at the welcome table and can be viewed online at the
Section’s website, http://awssection.org/cleveland/. At the January meeting the attendees will discuss the
proposed by-laws and vote.

Christmas Party and Auction
The time has come to collect items for the Cleveland Section’s annual Christmas Auction, Tuesday, December
13 at St. Paul’s Hellenic Center.
Check your shop and garage for good used items. Call your suppliers. Talk to your boss. Seek welding related
equipment and supplies, artwork, services, weekend get-a-ways, tickets to plays, ball games, races, golf
equipment, flower and fruit baskets, and Christmas gift items.
At last year’s auction, more than 100 attendees added $7,000 to the section’s scholarship fund.
All the money from the live and silent auctions funds the Cleveland Section’s three named scholarships, the
John Gerken, the Jack Buck, and the Ray Sacha. The Cleveland section awards these scholarships to
residents within the section boundaries. It is not necessary to be an AWS member or related to an AWS
member to apply for these scholarships.
Thank you for helping support our students.
CWI Seminars and Exams
Two seminars and certification exams to qualify as an AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) are scheduled
for this area in July and October 2012.
The July seminar runs July 22-27, 2012, and the exam is Saturday, July 28. The October dates are October
21-26 for the seminar, and October 27 for the exam. Both are scheduled for the Lincoln Electric Company.
Apply and register for either of these seminars and exams in order to meet the application deadlines: June 18
for the July seminar and exam, and September 17 for the October seminar and exam.
The CWI certification is widely recognized in the worldwide welding industry as a method to help ensure the
highest level of quality workmanship.
The seminar provides a way for skilled and knowledgeable individuals, with limited time to study, to prepare for
the AWS certification exam. Seasoned instructors teach the material you need to know and how to use and
understand the latest standards.
PLEASE NOTE: Registering to attend one of the exam prep courses does not automatically qualify you to take
the AWS certification exam. The exam application must be submitted separately to the Certification
Department six weeks prior to the exam date you have selected. For more details on this program, visit the
AWS website at http://www.aws.org/certification/CWI or call 800-443-9353, ext. 273.
Tracking CWI PDH’s
Cleveland Section CWIs are responsible to keep track of their PDH credits.
CWIs can pick up a form to document their PDHs at the welcome table. Just fill out the form and get a
signature from a section officer, the program chair, the speaker, or a board designee. The meeting notices
state programs eligible for PDH credit. The CWI can also use the form to record PDHs earned by attending
technical meetings of other societies.
The Cleveland Section does not keep attendance records and thus cannot verify that an individual attended a
specific meeting.
Discounts on Welding Equipment/Tools
Card-carrying AWS members can receive Members’-only discounts on welding equipment and tools of the
trade from participating distributors through the GAWDA / AWS Discount Program. Discounts and items
discounted are at the sole discretion of each distributor/branch. For the discount amount, please contact the
company/branch directly. To see a list of participating distributors, use the AWS web site http://www.aws.org.
SPONSORS
Many of our sponsors offer their time as board members and volunteers and donate items for our annual
auction, please support them.
Every month during the Section’s business year, over six hundred welding professionals see the ads in this
newsletter. That’s over 5,000 opportunities each this year. Many of those welding professionals make
purchasing decisions. A business card ad is a great way to get a buyer’s attention and show support for the
Cleveland Section. Please contact Harry Sadler at 216-383-2444 or .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) for
more information. A business card ad is only $200 for the entire year.
